This course explores the history of Korean art from prehistoric period to Joseon dynasty. We will develop a critical and historical reading of the visual traits of important Korean arts, such as pottery in prehistoric period, sculpture and wall painting in the Three Kingdoms period, Buddhist painting and celadon in Goryeo dynasty, art craft and painting in Joseon dynasty and examine how various artistic features are tied to different historical, social and cultural contexts.

Introduction to museums and museology, theories and methods of their operations, relationships between museology, art history, and new technologies for archiving and exhibiting artifacts.

This course explores the rich visual language of Asian Buddhist art. Topics will include the development of Buddhist iconography, art styles and the influence of other cultural and historical factors that shaped both iconography and style of Buddhist art in East Asia.
